It’s freezing. Winter is rude. Your lips are chapped, your hair is dry, and you’re mentally already on a beach somewhere with a drink in hand ☀️

But before you zip that suitcase and live your best vacay life, we need to talk about vacation hair care, because sun, salt, chlorine, hotel air, and questionable tools can absolutely wreck your hair if you’re not prepared.

As a stylist, I see it every year: clients come back glowing… and their hair? Not so much.

Follow these 10 vacation hair rules and you’ll come home relaxed and still loving your hair.

1. Pack Your Own Hair Products (Hotel Minis Are a Trap)

Hotel shampoo bottles look cute. Luxurious, even. But most of the time? They turn your hair into hay 🥲

Unless the hotel happens to stock a miracle product line that magically suits your hair type, don’t risk it. Hotel products are usually:

  • Overly stripping

  • One-size-fits-none

  • Heavy on fragrance, light on actual care

📌 Rule #1: Pack your own products. Always.

2. Never Trust the Hotel Hair Dryer 🚫

I don’t care how fancy the hotel is, hotel hair dryers are not your friend.

They’re usually:

  • Underpowered

  • Overheated

  • Designed with slow airflow + high heat (the worst combo)

Translation?🔥 More damage, more frizz, more regret.

If you care about your hair:

  • Bring your own travel dryer

  • Or air dry whenever possible

Your ends will thank you.

3. Make Minis of Your Own Products (Yes, It’s Annoying — Yes, It’s Worth It)

Instead of bringing your entire bathroom, just pack the essentials.

Your vacation hair survival kit:

  • Shampoo

  • Hair mask

  • Leave-in conditioner with heat protection

  • ONE styling product you can’t live without

Mine? A beachy salt texture spray 🌊Easy, low effort, vacation-approved.

4. Sun, Sand & Chlorine Are Not Gentle

Let’s be clear:

  • Chlorine clings to the cuticle

  • Sand clings to the scalp

  • Both dry your hair out and can turn blondes a weird green 😬

After swimming:✔️ Rinse immediately✔️ Double cleanse (two shampoos, no skipping)

One shampoo removes the surface gunk. The second actually cleans your hair.

5. Always Double Cleanse on Vacation

Vacation hair = more buildup than usual.

Between sunscreen, sweat, saltwater, and pool chemicals, one shampoo just isn’t enough.

🫧 Rule: If you swam or spent the day in the sun, double cleanse every wash day.

This helps prevent:

  • Dryness

  • Dullness

  • Breakage

  • That “why does my hair feel weird?” feeling

6. Turn Spa Days Into Hair Mask Days (Pro Move)

If you’re doing a spa day, listen closely 👀

Before entering the sauna:

  • Apply a dollop of hair mask to your ends

  • Clip your hair up neatly

  • Relax and let the heat do the work

✨ Instant deep conditioning treatment while you chill.Effort level: minimal. Results: elite.

7. Bring a Silk Bonnet or Silk Pillowcase

This one is criminally underrated.

Hotel pillows + dry air = frizz city.

Packing a silk bonnet or silk pillowcase helps:

  • Reduce frizz

  • Prevent breakage

  • Keep styles looking better for longer

It takes up almost no space and saves your hair overnight.

8. Microfibre Hair Towels Are a Must 🏖️

If you’re traveling without a microfibre towel, we need to talk.

They are:

  • Gentle on wet hair

  • Perfect for beach days

  • Lightweight and suitcase-friendly

Less friction = less breakage = happier hair.

Win. Win. Win.

9. Less Heat, More Air Drying

Vacation is not the time to be heat-styling daily.

Let your hair rest:

  • Air dry whenever possible

  • Embrace texture

  • Use low heat only when needed

Your hair already has enough to deal with on vacay.

10. Protect Your Ends Like They’re Expensive (Because They Are)

Your ends are the oldest, most fragile part of your hair, and they take the biggest hit on vacation.

Daily habits that help:

  • Lightweight oil on the ends

  • Gentle detangling

  • Protective styles when needed

Healthy ends = you don’t come home needing an emergency haircut ✂️

Final Thoughts: Vacation Hair Should Be Easy, Not Damaging

Vacations are for relaxing, not repairing hair damage afterward.

With a little prep and the right habits, you can:

  • Enjoy the sun

  • Swim without stress

  • Come home with hair that still feels good
